Human and vehicular movements were today disrupted in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital due to sporadic shooting during an encounter between the operatives of the Nigeria Customs service and suspected smugglers.

Witnesses who spoke with Radio Nigeria alleged that the suspected smugglers had resisted the seizure of their vehicles loaded with rice, vegetable oil and other contraband items when accosted by the customs operatives along the Akinolugbade – Quarry Road area of the state.

The witnesses claimed that the suspected smugglers also resorted to attacking the Customs operatives with bottles, stones and other dangerous objects while residents of the area scampered for safety.

Some of those who spoke with Radio Nigeria condemned the indiscriminate use of guns and other dangerous weapons in such a place where people carrying out their normal daily activities could become victims of stray bullets.

Our correspondent reports that normalcy had been restored to the area with security agents positioned at different locations to prevent further breach of peace.

When contacted, The State Customs Public Relations Officer, Mr Abdullahi Maiwada said the Customs operatives had to shoot in the air and call for reinforcement to secure the seizures.

Mr Maiwada explained that the suspected smuggled items were successfully taken into the command’s custody without any casualty and advised Nigerians to support the fight against smuggling.
