A two day workshop on fake news” Catalyst for National Disunity”, organised by Nigerian Press Council, is currently ongoing at the International Conference Centre, Univesity of Ibadan.

Declaring the workshop open, Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalist, Oyo state council, Mr Adewumi Faniran represented by Vice Chairman Olusola Oladapo, described fake news as a poison to the society, hence the need to wage war against it.

In a lead paper titled “Fake News and Editorial Integrity”, Media Adviser to Osun State Governor on Speech Writing, Mr Sola Imoru, who highlighted the dangerous consequences of fake news on Peace, Unity and development, emphasised the need for concerted effort by the media, the National Assembly and other stakeholders to come up with appropriate regulations and sanctions against generators, drivers and those sharing fake news.

Welcoming participants to the programme, the Acting Executive Secretary, Nigerian Press Council, Mr Victor Egharevba, Noted that the workshop was put together to further sensitize journalists on ways to combat fake news and its attendant consequences on Political stability and national development.

The two day workshop which has participating Journalists drawn from media houses across the Southwest of Nigeria end tomorrow Friday the 29th of March.
