It took the intervention of the security operatives to rescue the centre referee, Mr Ebuka Emmanuel from being lynched by fans of Gateway United Football Club of Ogun State in match day three, of 2018/2019 Nigeria National League, NNL.

The fans had allegedly attacked the referee over what they described as unfair officiating in the encounter between Gateway United and Nnewi United played at MKO Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that the medical team on ground attended to Mr. Ebuka after he was rescued from angry fans.

Nnewi United had defeated the Ogun State owned team, three goals to two in the encounter before the fans descended heavily on the referee.

Abiam Nelson had put the visitors ahead before Azeez Abdulsalam got a brace for the home team, before the half time.

John Peter equalized for the Nnewi team in the 80th minutes before Ezeh Chibuzor got the winning goal in the ninetieth minute to put the match beyond Gateway United.

The Akeem Busari led team had lost the FA Cup to Almar FC in final of the competition at the weekend

Head coach of Nnewi United, Christian Okonkwo commended his players for the victory, pointing out that playing in the NPFL remained his target.
