An Ondo State Magistrate Court sitting in Akure has remanded Lance Corporal Sunday Awolola at Olokuta Prison, Akure for alleged rape of a 300 Level student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, AAUA.
Magistrate Mayowa Olanipekun, who ordered Awolola’s remand following the application by Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Adesegun seeking that the soldier be kept at the prison pending legal advice from the state director of public prosecution.
Magistrate Olanipekun rejected the objection of the soldier’s counsel, Mr kayode Ikotun, who sought his bail on health grounds.
The case has been adjourned till the 15th of November this year.
Awolola, who had been dismissed by the Nigerian Army over the offence, is facing one count charge of having an unlawful carnal knowledge of the undergraduate on the 31st of July 2019 at a military check point along Akungba- Ikare Akoko
The offence, according to the charge sheet, is punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 of the Ondo State of Nigeria.
