Agriculture is an important mechanism for economic growth.

An agricultural expert, Mr. Arun Karthick stated this in Iperindo in Atakumosa East Local Government Area of Osun State, at a programme organized for young farmers in the state.

Speaking on diversification of income in Cocoa section, Mr. Karthick said young people account for 18% of the global population and over half of them live in rural areas, hence the need to provide social amenities for them to prevent rural-urban drift.

According to him, agriculture remained a significant employer of labour and can contribute to a significant reduction of unemployment in the country.

In a remark, a director in the state Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Gbenga Abodunrin emphasized the need for government-private partnership to improve quality of cocoa beans for acceptability in the global market.

In separate interviews, two participants at the programme, Mr. Ademola Ismaila and Mrs. Kemi Ogunsakin urged government agencies to intensity its agricultural extension programmes to boost agriculture in the rural areas.

Explaining the rationale behind the free medical test for young cocoa farmers within the ages of 18-35 years, the programme officer, Action Health Incorporated, Mrs. Tina Igbinedion, maintained that it was expedient for the people to be healthy to perform optimally on their farms.
