NGO Calls for Proper Laws on Elder Abuse

A Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, Centre on Ageing, Development & Rights of Older Persons, CADROP, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, has solicited the support of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, for adequate care of the elders in the society. Executive Director of CADROP, Mr. Yinka Ajomale stated this during a courtesy call on the management of FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, at the Broadcasting House, Oba Adebimpe Road, Dugbe, Ibadan. Mr. Ajomale who appreciated the efforts of the management of FRCN Ibadan for contributing immensely to the care of the elders through its programmes urged the corporation to partner CADROP in its efforts to make life more meaningful for the elders. He also decried the fact that there was no real provision in the nation’s constitution as to what constitutes abuse of the elderly, which has made it tough to prosecute people who indulge in elder abuse.

In his response, the Zonal Director, FRCN, Ibadan National Station, Alhaji Mohammed Bello lauded the efforts of the NGO and promised to support efforts aimed at sensitizing the public on taking proper care of their aged ones.

Alhaji Bello noted that different forms of abuse on the older persons should be eradicated; saying there was need to inform younger ones of the importance of taking responsible actions concerning the elderly in their lives.

CADROP would organise a programme as part of activities to celebrate this year’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which has as its theme “Lifting up Voices”, on the 19th of June in Ibadan.
