June 12 as National Democracy Day

Since 1999 when the 4th Republic began, there have been clamours for the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day but its celebration remained the affairs of the Southwest region of Nigeria. Just last year, President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as Democracy Day with effect from this year and went ahead to give a posthumous honour to the acclaimed winner of the 1993 election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. Now that June 12 has become Democracy Day and a National Holiday, Radio Nigeria correspondent, Ridwan Fasasi examines how the day moved from regional recognition to national celebration.
