Landslide Leaves 36 Dead, 15 Missing in China

Landslide has left at least 36 people dead at a village in southern China following continual heavy downpours.

BBC, citing state-run local media, says 15 people remain unaccounted for in the aftermath of mudslide that buried over 20 houses in the province of Guizhou.

Efforts have resulted in the rescue of 40 people in Shuicheng county, with footage from state broadcaster CCTV showing rescue workers using diggers to unearth survivors from a huge mound in the village, according to BBC. Fatalities reportedly include two children and a mother with a baby.

Emergency and medical aid centre for victims has been established at a local school, while the government is said to have set aside 30 million yuan ($4.4m; £3.5m) for rescue efforts and the relocation of victims, BBC citing Xinhua news agency.

Rural and mountainous areas of China are prone to landslides, especially during torrential rainfall.
