Residents of Abeokuta South Local Government of Ogun state have called for provision of comfort stations across the council to reduce open defecation. 

The residents and sanitation officials of the local government made the call while reacting to open defecation practices in central Abeokuta metropolis, the state capital. 

Correspondent Wale Oluokun reports that open defecation has continued unabated in the state capital.

People that still practice open defecation in Abeokuta are residents of rocky terrains including Itoko, Itesi, oke aleji,oke ijemo, ilugun, among others. 

Most of the affected areas are said to be the core old places in Abeokuta where the well to do had moved to new sites. 

In these areas, to build houses with toilets is regarded level of prosperity and your exposure. 

Some indigines of the areas while speaking on what could stop open defecation at the heart of Abeokuta called for an aggressive construction of ventilated improved latrines.

The respondents noted that water closets in some of the areas could be linked with central sewages for ten or more houses. 

Also, the respondents attributed open defecation to the age-long practice, called for attitudinal change among the core Abeokuta people.

A sanitary inspector with Abeokuta South Local Government, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said hijack of the local government funds by previous administration had made the sanitation issues in the area go bad.

He called for the provision of comfort stations through the public private partnership arrangement to solve the problem of open defecation in the affected areas. 

It is expected that for Nigeria to attain open defecation free status, involves collaboration of all stakeholders.
