Promotion of traditional media of communication by present day journalists has been identified as key to enhancing unity and development in the country.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mr Ahmed Raji, made the submission while delivering a lecture on media, security and peaceful coexistence at the opening ceremony of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo state council 2019 press week, held in Ibadan.

Mr Raji, who was represented by Mr. Anone Usman, lamented the neglect of traditional means of communication in recent years, which he believed was a great tool for the promotion of cultural beliefs and peaceful coexistence in the country.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria also called on Media practitioners to always give accurate representation of conflict situations and avoid reportage of news that could fuel conflicts.

Mr Raji added that the media should strengthen their role as mediating agents through increased interactions among diverse people of the Nigerian society.

Commenting, Zonal Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Alhaji Mohammed Bello explained that the ownership of the media had made it so difficult for pen professionals to enshrine objectivity in their reportage.

While declaring the 2019 press week open, Oyo state Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde through the deputy Governor, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, said the present government in the state had created an enabling environment for the media and pledged to continue the gesture.

Earlier, in an address of welcome, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo state council, Mr Adewumi Faniran said the annual press week was a tool being used by the union to further lend its voice to the  call for national unity.

 Mr Faniran maintained that the current leadership of the union in the state had done excellently in moving the union forward through various human capacity building and infrastructural programmes, despite paucity of funds.

In separate goodwill messages, former national President of nuj, Mr Lanre Ogundipe and Aare of Ago Are, Oba Dr Kofoworola Ilufemiloye  urged the media to live up to its responsibility as a watch dog to government.

Highpoint of the event was the conferment of award as Grand Patron of Oyo NUJ on Governor Seyi Makinde.
