The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP has commenced construction on a gully erosion site in Midoma/Iwerebor in Ika North East Local Government Area of the state, and the payment of compensation to project affected persons.

At the groundbreaking ceremony in Owanta, the Delta State Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, represented by the state Commissioner for Environment Mr. Chris Onogba, noted persons affected by the gully erosion would be resettled before the commencement of civil work in the area.

The Governor urged the residents to properly utilize the funds given to them as compensation for properties and farmland that would be affected in the process of construction.

Similarly, a representative of the Federal Project Management unit of NEWMAP, Mrs. Ruth Mshelia, in a remark said properties in the area would appreciate in value after completion of the initiate, stressing those whose houses were not demolished would not be compensated.

Also, the Delta State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP Mr. Isaac Ufiofio, said the gesture to pay the victims before the commencement of the initiate was to demonstrate the commitment of the government towards alleviating the sufferings of those affected by the natural disaster.

Delta State Government had last month signed a deal with Levant Construction Company Limited worth two point four billion Naira, to execute the erosion control project in the affected area.
