Oyo State House of Assembly has advised the State Executive to further study the present situation of the coronavirus pandemic in the state before it commenced the reopening of schools as planned.
This followed a matter of urgent public importance presented to the House by the lawmaker representing Ibadan Southwest State Constituency 2, Mr Oluwafemi Fowokanmi asking the House to stop the Ministry of Education from prohibiting the reopening of unregistered private schools.
Some of the lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr Muhammed Fadeyi and the Majority Leader, Mr Sanjo Adedoyin expressed concern that with the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the state, the Executive should rethink and understand the vulnerability of the children.
The lawmakers who lauded the efforts of the Executive at curbing the spread of COVID-19 said reopening of schools now may expose the children to the virus.
They urged the Ministry of Education to be proactive at curtailing the spread of virus by ensuring strict compliance of all protocols as Oyo State prepare to reopen schools amidst the pandemic.
Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin called on the Ministry to readdress the issue of prohibiting unregistered private schools from reopening, and rather, to compel them to commence registration processes and give them guidelines on COVID-19 prevention.
The House also approved the appointment of Retired General Ajibola Toogun and Retired Colonel Olayinka Olayanju as the chairman and commandant of the Oyo State Security Network Agency code named Amotekun Corps.
Meanwhile, the bill on sexual and gender based violence response team and referral centre 2020 passed through the first reading.
