Participants at the maiden edition of the Get Involved Leadership Training (GILT) organised by the Lead Generation Initiative (LGI) have been enjoined to make themselves valuable asset to their communities and strive beyond being mere political mobilizers.

The call was made by Lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal constituency, Shina Peller and the Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, Samson Itodo, over the weekend at the second day of the training held at Jogor Centre, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Mr. Itodo explained to the participants that leadership was about the people one was able to re-create, and urged them to strive to be inter-dependent leaders and not dependent leaders.

According to him, inter-dependent leaders train and produce other leaders, while the dependent leaders are dictators who would not allow others to grow and be better.

“Leadership is about the people, it is not about you. As you strive to be a leader, know that your task entails supporting people to be better; it is about distributing roles and responsibilities.” Itodo said.

Chairman, Board of Trustees of the LGI, and lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa/ Federal constituency, Shina Peller, reminded the participants that Nigerian youths were the strength of the country, and emphasized on the need for them to be involved in the policy-making process that affected their lives either directly or indirectly.

Peller charged the participants to pass across the leadership skills they have acquired through the training to others and be determined to face any challenge that may arise in the course of re-building their nation courageously.

“I give thanks to God for being a part of the Lead Generation Initiative, and I am happy that the Get Involved Leadership Training of the LGI kick-started in my home state, Oyo. We’ll replicate same in all the remaining 35 states of the federation and FCT.

“We have started on a very good note, and with determination, we are not going to stop until we have achieved a Nigeria of our dream that all will be proud of.”

Responding to the training through a series of presentations by each of the five categorized groups namely Trust, Integrity, Professionalism, Excellence and Innovation, the participants appreciated the organizers of the event, Lead Generation Initiative, for giving them such a great platform to learn new leadership skills expected of good leaders.

The participants expressed their readiness in taking part in the task to re-build Nigeria for the next decade, while they added that youths were the future and that the future starts today.

They called on every young Nigerian who believes that he has a future to get involved.

The training ended with presentation of certificates to the participants. The Lead Generation Initiative is a non-governmental, non-profit and non-political organization committed to raising and providing opportunities for a new generation of leaders to build the Nigeria of our dreams.
