Residents and motorists along Basorun/Akobo/Olorunda-Abaa area in Ibadan Oyo State, are having hectic time reaching their destinations as a result of the deplorable condition of the road.
The situation has reached a level where residents of the area abandoning their private cars for commercial vehicles and motorcycles while others are relocating outside the area due to hardship on the road
The bad state of the road was as a result of revocation of Idi Ape/Basorun/Akobo-Ojurin/Barrack contract by the Oyo State Government some months ago.
The road is one major road within Ibadan metropolis that serves as a link to three local government councils in the State.
It is the major link that connects Ibadan North East Local Government in Basorun to Lagelu and Akinyele Local Government via Akobo and Olohunda axis.
The road, which ordinarily should have been completed within 18 months has taken longer than necessary which resulted in the termination of the contract.
Speaking with Radio Nigeria, Mr Adeyemi Oyerinde and Mr. Remi Hammed who are residents in the area, described their experiences on the road as terrible lamenting that their vehicles had been damaged.
Some commercial drivers decried that the situation had seriously affected their income, noting that daily trips along Akobo/Olorunda Abba road had drastically reduced.
Radio Nigeria correspondent, who visited the road, observed that heavy duty vehicles plying the road were stucked on some spots, thereby making passage of other vehicles difficult, thus creating hold-ups on the route.
The residents therefore called on Governor Seyi Makinde to re-award Idi Ape/Basorun/Akobo-Ojurin/Barrack road and commence the rehabilitation of Barrack/Olorunda Abaa road to ease the hardships being faced on the road.
Over two hundred existing communities between Basorun-Akobo to Olorunda Abaa have an average of over five hundred vehicles both for private and commercial purposes plying the road on daily basis.
The contract for the rehabilitation of the road was awarded in May 2017 at a whopping sum of 7.1 Billion Naira, including the construction of a flyover bridge at General Gas.
The 7.1 kilometer road stretches from Idi Ape to Basorun to Akobo Ojurin and terminated at the end of Army Barracks second gate.
