Some Residents of Abeokuta have called on the Nigeria Police to work on its image rather than blaming the youths that protested against its activities.

The residents made this known while reacting to the incident of rejecting criminal suspects arrested by the public by officers of the Zone two Area command of the Nigeria Police in Abeokuta.

The Police Area Command beside the Press Centre in Oke Ilewo had turned back some youths that arrested suspects for an attempt to steal a car in the area.

While the youths were told to take the suspect to another station, some of the officers gave the hint that their decision was in answer to the youths protest that they don’t want police.

A businessman, Mr Timothy Akande who said the policemen action was in bad faith noted that such a reaction could encourage jungle justice.

Also speaking, a witness to the incident, Mr, Are Ibikunle said the suspect had approached them at the Car market pretending to be a buyer and was given the key when he attempted to bolt away with the car.

He explained that the car seller later called the Vigilante men to take custody of the suspects after the police station rejected the suspects.

The Ogun Police Command Spokesman, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi when contacted on the incident said he was not aware of the rejection of the suspect by any station.

  1. The complainant was referred to one of the Nigeria police division who has jurisdiction over the matter since area command has no jurisdiction over it… As it is the suspect is currently in custody. The area command does not attend to such cases, verify news before posting.
