The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is annually held on December 2 to raise awareness of the atrocities of modern slavery.
In the olden days, the pattern of slavery varied from kidnapping, acquiring individuals as war loots and buying of slaves among other ways.
After many efforts from governments of the world to halt forms of slavery, modern day slavery has become the other of the day.
Through this system, human beings are being trafficked under a decoy of providing greener pastures.
Some Nigerian youths among other African counterparts have become victims of modern day slavery through acts of human trafficking.
For instance, within the year 2020, hundreds of trafficked Nigerians have been repatriated from different countries while efforts are still ongoing for safe return of other trafficked citizens.
Radio Nigeria had a chat with some Nigerians who had experienced modern day slavery.
Condemning the act of human trafficking, Special Adviser on Diaspora to oyo State Governor, Bolanle Sarumi-Aliyu expressed concern that many victims of human trafficking were trapped in a bid to find greener pasture.
Sarumi-Aliyu hinted that government was doing all to provide conducive atmosphere for the youths to discourage irregular migration.
Also speaking on the issue, Commander, National Agency for the Prohibition of trafficking in persons, NAPTIP, Lagos state command Ganiu Aganran implored the youth not to be too desperate in the bid to seeking greener pastures.
Mr. Aganran also highlighted lack of social safety net as a major problem of modern day slavery.
On his part, president, Journalist International Forum for migration , JIFORM, MR. Ajibola Abayomi said government needed to step up its game to stall all forms of modern day slavery.
Mr. Abayomi added that Jiform was poised at ensuring that all vices associated with trafficking were reported.
