President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a stern warning to terrorists and bandits targeting schools, saying the country will not allow the destruction of the school system.

In a statement on Saturday, he commended Kaduna State government and early response of the military, which led to the rescue of 180 students, including 8 staff of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation in Mando, and directed those still missing be found and returned safely.

Gunmen raided the college and kidnapped at least 30 students, government officials and parents said in the latest mass abduction targeting a school.

The kidnappers released a video of the students, which has since gone viral.

It showed them pleading for their lives while being flogged by their abductors.

President Buhari expressed sympathy with the victims and hoped for an early end to the ordeal of those still held captive.

He commended efforts and contributions of local intelligence in significantly thwarting the kidnappers saying the military may be efficient and well-armed but it needed good efforts for the nation’s defense and the local population must rise to this challenge.
