There is the urgent need for an effective legislative framework on the funding of education in Nigeria to enable every citizen have access to quality education.

Vice Chancellor, Dominican University, Ibadan, Professor Anthony Akinwale stated this while delivering a lecture titled “University and Nigeria: A Critical Survey” at the 106th National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of the University of Nigeria Alumni Association, held in Ibadan.

Professor Akinwale, who lamented that the current standard of education in Nigeria was nothing to write home about, stressed that education must be adequately funded by the government, Alumni associations and other relevant stakeholders.

The don also called on universities’ managements to ensure they run in a truly democratic system which he said would translate into the type of democracy needed for meaningful development in the country.

Chairman on the occasion, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who was represented by the Alara Oodaye of Araland, Ile-Ife, Oba Adebisi Layade, said university alumni associations had critical roles to play in taking the country to an enviable height.

Earlier, National President, University of Nigeria Alumni Association, Mr. Ben Okoronkwo said the theme of the NEC meeting was borne out of the need for stakeholders to pay more attention to university education in Nigeria.

The NEC meeting, which featured presentation of awards to distinguished individuals including Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, Deputy Governor of the state, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Betty Akeredolu, also witnessed the presentation of an award of excellent performance to Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN.

The event was also graced by the immediate former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Moses Adeyemo and the Acting Zonal Director, Radio Nigeria, Ibadan National Station, Pastor Bolanle Owoyemi Oluwakayode Banjo
