Chief of Army staff, Lieutenant General Farook Yahaya, has reiterated the call for officers and men to exhibit professionalism in the discharge of their duties to defend the country. 

He made the call at a Regimental Sergeant Majors, RSM, convention at the 2nd division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan. 

Lieutenant General Yahaya said the convention for the RSM came at the right time the country is being faced with numerous security challenges. 

He said RSM’s primary assignment was to assist their commanders in maintaining standards and discipline amongst non-commissioned  members and act as a parental figures to their subordinate,  hence the need to exhibit professionalism at all times.

Lieutenant Yahaya noted that RSM serve as the link to officers and soldiers and at the same time the custodians of the Army’s ethics, custom and traditions which are essential for efficiency purposes. 

“I have urged them to do their best and everything to restore and ensure that Nigerian Army tradition to achieve the overall success of the military “

Contributing, General officer commanding,  GOC, 2nd division Nigerian Army ibadan, major General Gold Ndubuisi said the convention for the RSMs became imperative to achieve the chief of Army staff’s vision which was to attain professionalism  while restoring peace in troubled areas. 

General Ndubuisi opined that the mission therefore could not be achieved without a professional and highly Regimental Sergent Majors, RSMs that are ready to discharge their duties with decorum at all times.

The GOC noted that the participants should see the convention as a platform to position themselves for the roles in actualising the purpose of the creation of RSMs formations.

“I urged you to embrace with all seriousness and ensure you return to your units and formations better equipped to perform your role adequately.”

On his part, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state who spoke through Chief of staff, Mr Segun Ogunwuyi said for the Nigerian Army to be in good shape, the senior non committed officers have to double their efforts. 

Governor Makinde urged the current leadership in the Military to focus more on training and retraining of officers as well as getting state of the art ammunition to combat insecurity hindering the development of the country. 

“I believe with the kind of leadership we have in Nigerian Army currently, they are ready to look at what is needed to have the Army that we use to have in those days”

Governor Makinde, therefore pledged his supports to the Army and other Security agencies to collectively achieve a crime free and secured Oyo state. 

Representatives of other security agencies were present at the convention which has its theme as “Professionalism in a Regimented Environment:The RSM in perspective “.
