The Ogun State Police Command has described as unwarranted the closure of banks and financial institutions in Ijebu-Ode and its environs over an alleged robbery threat.

The command in a statement by the spokesman, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi said the decision was unprofessional behaviour by bankers in the area in the face of continuous assurance of safety by the police and other security agencies.

Mr. Oyeyemi stated that it was treacherous and mischievous as bankers in the Ijebu area have always been complaining of robbery threats.

The spokesman of the police command said the bankers have always disregard security arrangements by the police in conjunction with other security agencies for their protection and always claim of receiving threat letters from the armed robbers, but will always not make the letters available to the police for investigation.

Mr. Oyeyemi also accused some of the bankers of deliberate exposure of their banks and customers to security risks by exposing the threats to the public rather than security agencies.

The spokesman said bankers in the axis have given out themselves as first suspects in any case of bank robbery having failed to disclose their source of information.

He said the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edward Ajogun has directed a full-scale investigation into the recent bankers’ claim of receiving a threat letter from the armed robbers and assured the public of the safety of their lives and property including the banks and other financial institutions.
