No fewer than four shops with goods worth several millions of naira were this morning destroyed in a fire disaster at Jamoje Compound, Agbeni, Ibadan.

The inferno started in the early hours of Monday, and efforts by residents and shop owners within the vicinity to put out the fire was to no avail leaving the affected traders lamenting their losses.

Radio Nigeria observed that the timely arrival of officials of federal and state fire services prevented the spread of the fire to neighbouring stores and residential buildings.

A resident, Mr kehinde Ayinla and a trader who identified his name as Mr Musa said they could not withstand the raging fire adding that the cause of the fire was unknown.

The Principal Fire Superintendent, Gbagi Fire Station, Mr. Jimoh Musibau said his team responded to the distress calls put to them, saying four shops in the affected building had already been engulfed in fire before their arrival.

Also, an Assistant Superintendent Corps, of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps said adequate security had been put in place to prevent hoodlums from looting shops in the area.
