Activities such as burning of forest, animal grazing and deforestation are inimical to forest sustainability hence people should desist from those acts.

Head, Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology, Federal University Oye-Ekiti. Dr. Deji Adejumo, gave the advice in an interview with Radio Nigeria to commemorate this year’s International Day of Forests in Ado-Ekiti.

Dr. Adejumo said the forests were so important to the survival of humanity such as furniture making, construction jobs, source of energy and papers and must be guided judiciously.

Speaking on this year’s theme of International Day of Forests “Forests and health.” the forest policy and economics expert emphasized that forests helped to prevent global warming and climate change.

He stressed that the forests help to reduce the negative impact of fossil fuel, used to power generators for homes and industries, that cause global warming and climate change, as a result of carbon released to the atmosphere.

The Head,Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, however, called for planting of more trees, proper regulation of forests and monitoring of carbon-emitted vehicles to safeguard humanity.

The United Nations General Assembly in 2012 proclaimed March 21 as the International Day of Forests to raise awareness on the importance of all types of forests.
