The Ondo State government has commenced the disbursement and presentation of cheques to retired Local Government staff and secondary school teachers for the year 2012.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa made the presentation at the Cocoa Conference Hall, Alagbaka, Akure.

He emphasized that the payment was to relieve the senior citizens and that his administration would continue to clear the backlog of arrears of retired workers in the state.

The governor said that the administration was changing the wrong perception that retirement benefits were meant for those with connections expressing his commitment to all irrespective of political affiliations.

He enjoined the retirees to make good use of the money by taking care of their health.

The Governor disclosed that the payment of gratuity would not affect the monthly pension for the state retirees.

Earlier, the commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro and the Head of Service, Mr Bayo Philip both appreciated the government for the fund released.

The State Chairman, of Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Mr Johnson Osunyemi pledged the support of the pensioners to the government 

Two retired teachers,  Mr Joshua Adeoye and Mrs Grace Adebayo thanked the state government saying the payment was long overdue.
