Lawmakers and other relevant authorities involved in the formulation and implementation of policies for local government administration have been urged to introduce measures for checks and balances to strengthen the system against corruption and financial mismanagement.

The submission was made by a political analyst, Mr Akeem Balogun while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Abeokuta, on the recent Supreme Court verdict, granting financial autonomy to local government councils in the country.

Mr Balogun said the judgment was a landmark decision capable of empowering local communities and promoting economic growth, urging the local government chairmen to see it as a motivation for better performance.

In a reaction, the Ogun State Chairman, Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Mr Adebayo Adefesobi described the verdict as a significant development that would help to bring governance closer to the people and improve the delivery of essential services.

Mr Adefesobi applauded both the federal and the state governments for their commitment, expressing optimism that all stakeholders would work together to revitalize the local government system to enhance growth at the grassroots.
