One person has been reportedly injured in the fire incident that razed 15 shops and destroyed goods worth millions of naira at the Oba Lipede Market, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The inferno, which reportedly started around 10 pm on Saturday 13th July was allegedly caused by a power surge in one of the makeshift shops outside the shopping mall.

Radio Nigeria gathered that bags of palm kernels and cooking gas that were kept in the makeshift shop had aggravated the fire outbreak leading to massive losses for the traders, including a couple Basiru and Tolani Moses, who claimed that the fire razed the sum of 500 thousand naira cash, that was kept in their shop because banks were closed over the weekend.

A market leader, Mrs Tejumade Bakre, listed some of the goods destroyed by the inferno, electronics, foodstuff, kitchenware and beverages as well as items of clothing and fruits, maintained that the market was also looted following the incident, before the intervention of security agencies.

Among the early callers at the scene was the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mrs Funmi Efuwape who blamed the level of damage wreaked by the fire on indiscriminate structures and shanties erected within the premises of the main market.

Mrs Efuwape announced that an integrity test would be conducted on the main market building to ascertain its safety, while the government would roll out measures to renovate the facilities.
