Roads are inalienable features of cities, towns, and even villages to facilitate ease of movement for people, cycles, motorbikes and vehicles.

But then one city stands out as being queer – roads are alien on it! That city is Venice.

How come? You might ask.

In the 5th century, people fled their homes to avoid barbarian conquerors. A marshy lagoon was located just off the mainland and protected from the barbarians who would not cross the water.

As invasions continued across Italy more and more people fled until eventually, they realised there was a need for a new city. This led to the creation of Venice.

Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea.

Venice is situated on a group of 117 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges.

These are located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers.

Civillsable

It has no roads, just canals including the Grand Canal thoroughfare lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.

Venice, known also as the “City of Canals” “The Floating City,” and “Serenissima,” is arguably one of Italy’s most picturesque cities.

With its winding canals, striking architecture, and beautiful bridges, Venice is a popular destination for travel.
