Political Parties in Ogun State want the State Independent Electoral Commission, OGSIEC, to improve on its past records by ensuring the free and fair conduct of the local government elections scheduled to take place on Saturday, 16th November, 2024.
Representatives of the political parties who made the plea at a stakeholders meeting and public release of the election guidelines urged the commission to live above board and avoid giving credence to the allegations of acting a puppet show for the ruling party.
Chairman of the Inter-party Advisory Council, IPAC, Ogun State Council, Mr Sanyaolu Abayomi and the State Chairman of Social Democratic Party SDP, Mr Yinka Williams in their separate submissions advised the OGSIEC to adopt standard measures that would convince the political parties that the election would be free and fair
The party leaders emphasized the readiness of many political parties to participate actively in the elections, especially in view of the recent Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy and urged the electoral body to make every aspect of the process credible, beginning with the voters’ registration exercise.
Earlier, the Chairman of OGSIEC, Mr Babatunde Osibodu, represented by Mr Olatunji Akoni had announced that female candidates for councillorship posts would pay 100,000 naira, while the male candidates would part with 150,000 naira as administrative charges for participating in the elections.
Describing the gesture as gender sensitivity and advocacy for female participation in the democratic process, Mr Osibodu promised that this year’s local government elections in the state would be a genuine reflection of the choices made by people at the grassroots
