Ogun State government has reiterated plans to stop open defecation among residents, particularly those in the communities on the border it shares with Lagos State.

Speaking with journalists around the Berger borderline between Ogun and Lagos States, Special Adviser to the governor on Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, OGEPA, Dr Oluwadare Kehinde explained that the enforcement of relevant laws and prosecution of offenders would begin soon.

Dr Kehinde said after the ongoing joint sensitization campaign against the practice, organized by both states, the enforcement teams would commence operations and work in shifts to apprehend and prosecute offenders.

He emphasized that the measure was aimed at bringing offenders to justice for their actions, as well as to prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea in the state, especially in border towns around Mowe, Magboro, Warewa, Kara and Isheri.

Dr Kehinde said the government had constructed public toilets in different locations across the state, including the border towns as credible alternatives to open defecation.

Speaking on behalf of Lagos State, the General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi said the awareness was targeted at residents of the border towns to the two states on the dangers of open defecation.

Dr Ajayi announced that special attention would be paid to clearing human excreta and ensuring the sanitation of the road median from OPIC Plaza, to Kara, Berger and Otedola Bridge inward Lagos end of the newly rehabilitated Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.
