People of Ogun State have been reminded of the need to maintain proper hygienic practices including regular hand washing as necessary efforts to check the spread of communicable diseases such as cholera and monkeypox.

A Public Health Educator at the State Ministry of Health, Dr Olubukola Omotosho who made the call at a meeting of the State Mobilisation and Technical Committee in Abeokuta also announced that the state had no record of a new case of the diseases.

Dr Omotoso emphasized the importance of prevention, while explaining that 131 suspected cases of cholera were treated and discharged while four deaths were recorded in the outbreak witnessed in July this year.

On the state of routine immunization among the people, a Social and Behavioural Change Consultant with the UNICEF, Dr Peter Obam called for increased coverage in the state, pointing out that low vaccination rates, misinformation and vaccine hesitancy as well as poor public health infrastructure were some of the factors responsible for measles outbreaks in the country.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Alhaji Waheed Adesina had commended the UNICEF for the continued support towards sustaining the health and well-being of people in the state, adding that the crucial stakeholders meeting was aimed at equipping the participants with up-to-date knowledge on the prevention and control of Cholera and M-Pox.

Other Speakers at the meeting also commended the state government’s initiative of promoting the State Mobilisation and Technical Committee, comprising experts from relevant fields, to raise awareness and promote social change on specific issues affecting the state as well as providing the necessary technical assistance and expertise to further enhance the interventions.
