Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has revealed plans to introduce one hundred new Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, buses for use by transporters within the state.

This initiative is part of efforts to ease transportation challenges and provide a more affordable alternative for residents.

The announcement was made during a meeting at the governor’s office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where he also disclosed that the Federal Government would supply an additional twenty CNG buses and five hundred conversion kits to Ogun State within the week.

During the meeting with transport unions, Governor Abiodun emphasized the need to ensure fair transportation pricing, especially following recent hikes in fuel prices. He noted that the rising cost of petroleum products has often led to sharp increases in transportation fares, which has negatively impacted the state’s residents.

In response, the governor has inaugurated a committee to address these concerns, including key stakeholders such as the Commissioner of Police, the State Security Service, DSS, and transport union leaders.

The governor explained that the recent fuel scarcity and price hike should not result in exorbitant fare increases, noting that the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is aware of the challenges and is working on measures to reduce the burden on citizens.

Abiodun criticized transporters for raising fares by over 1000% when the increase in fuel prices was only about 30%, urging for more reasonable adjustments.

The state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Engr Gbenga Dairo, reminded transporters that fuel is only a fraction of their overall operating costs and called for restraint in fare adjustments.

The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, echoed these sentiments, urging transport operators to adopt a more consumer-friendly fare structure.

Representing the transport unions, Prince Samsudeen Apelogun, President of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners Association of Nigeria, ACOMORAN, praised Governor Abiodun for his innovations in the transportation sector and pledged to collaborate with other stakeholders to establish fair and sustainable transport fares.
