New executives that will pilot the affairs of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, MHWUN , Oyo state council, in the next four years have been elected in Ibadan.

In the keenly contested election, Mrs Bolanle Olumide-Lawal emerged as the Chairperson, having polled 29 votes to defeat her opponent, Mr Adegoke Isaac who had 25 votes.

Mr Olalekan Adekunle was elected the Vice Chairman, Engineer Ojelabi Olúwaṣeun as the Treasurer,  Mr Iseoluwa Oyeleke, Public Relations Officer, while the office of Trustee was clinched by Mrs Serifat Akanbi as  Mr Kabiru Oladejo became the Auditor

Addressing the delegates who were drawn from Ibarapa, Oke Ogun, Ogbomoso and Ibadan, the new Chairperson of the union, Mrs Bolanle Olumide- Lawal said her administration would ensure judicious use of the resources of the union and run an all-inclusive policy.

“I want to thank God Almighty who has made today a reality. I want to appreciate the presence of our next official and their assistance. I want to appreciate past chairmen and the Noble delegates and comrades.

“Nobody can stand without a pillar. You are my power, might, and strength. All these have happened within just two weeks. I want you to rally around me to have a successful Oyo state, and for us to reform the image of Oyo state. Oyo state is the headquarters of southwest and I want us to reform the dignity of Oyo state.”

In an interview, the returning officer who is also the former National Deputy Secretary General of the Health Workers’ Union, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Farouk, said the election was transparent and peaceful.

Alhaji Farouk who represented the National President of the Union, Dr Kabiru Minjibri (Magayaki Minjibri), urged the new executive to live up to the expectations of the union members.

 “This is the most democratic election in the history of medical and health workers because I know what Oyo state council was. If this type of election had been held in Nigeria, our country would have been a better place. I want the new executives to perform.”

Dr Minjibri had earlier enumerated the challenges confronting the union including current inflation triggered by subsidy removal, poor welfare packages for health workers and delay in the implementation of the national minimum wage of workers among others.

Also present at the election was the Assistant National Executive Council NEC, officer , Mrs Modupe Fabusuyi and other members of the union who expressed satisfaction on the peaceful conduct of the election and it’s outcome.

The 2024 delegate conference which attracted past national and state leaders of the union has the theme:” The Nigerian Health System in the Era of Economic Downturn: Issues, Challenges and Way Forward”
