Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has urged Local Government Chairmen across the state to actively key into his farming initiatives aimed at re-engaging youth in agriculture.

The governor who made this call during his inspection visits to farm settlements under his “Bring Back the Youth into Agriculture” programme in Eporo, Ikere, and Aramoko Ekiti, said this is necessary to ensure food sufficiency and generate wealth for the people.

Governor Oyebanji expressed concern that only six out of the 16 local governments in the state had shown interest in the initiative, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to address hunger and food shortages in Nigeria.

He also disclosed that the lands being cultivated for the farming programme in Ekiti were initially cleared by Chief Obafemi Awolowo for the same purpose during the regional government era, emphasizing the need for people to revisit the late sage’s plans for agriculture in the South West.

Speaking on the “Bring Back the Youth into Agriculture” scheme, the governor mentioned that the government had given seedlings, free fertilizers, cleared and ploughed lands, as well as provided security and accommodations for the farmers, while essentials like tools and mobility would be provided soon.

Some of the farmers expressed gratitude to the governor for creating such an opportunity for them and appealed to him to prioritize security around the farm settlements so that they could engage in farming activities without fear of being kidnapped or attacked.
