The federal government needs to set up a settlement plan for serving corps members to cater for their after service year endeavours.
A Professor of Psychology at the University of Ibadan, Rotimi Animashaun made the call in Ibadan while delivering the 50th Anniversary Lecture of the NYSC organised by the Commission in Oyo State.
Speaking on the theme: NYSC 5 Decades of Fostering National Unity and Development, Professor Animashaun explained that the scheme had lived up to its mandate of national integration and cohesion since its establishment fifty years ago, hence the need to widen the scope of the scheme to cater for the after-service life of the teeming youths mobilised for national service.
He noted that the NYSC had introduced laudable initiatives including Community Development Service, CDS and Skills Acquisition Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, saying starter packs should be provided for the corps members to curb the rate of unemployment in the country.
“The government should be able to provide for these teeming youths and widening the scope of NYSC will go a long way especially in rectifying the issue of high unemployment rate in the country.”
“There should be a sort of provision for corps members passing out of the scheme many of them would want to further their education, let there be a provision in this regard to encourage them. Some may want to venture into business let there be adequate funding because the youths are the strength of the nation.”
Professor Animashaun also advised government to solve the problem of insecurity so as to reduce parents’ struggles to influence the posting of corps members, a situation which he described as a threat to the sustenance of the scheme.
The don enjoined corps members to use social media to promote national unity, shun thuggery, cultism and drug abuse so as to rid the scheme of the deficit of love, trust, and social harmony bedeviling it.
Earlier in an address, the State Coordinator, NYSC, Oyo State, represented by Assistant Director, Corps Inspection and Monitoring, Mrs. Olabimpe Olusesi, said the scheme had contributed immensely to all aspects of national development, urging ex-corps members, serving and prospective corps members to work for the success of the scheme.
The lecture was well attended by representatives heads of security agencies, corps employers, traditional and religious leaders, and corps members serving in Oyo State.
