The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has rescinded a stop-work order earlier issued on the Ibadan Circular Road project.

The Governor, in issuing the fresh order, said that the decision came after a review meeting held between officials of the state government and the ENL Consortium Limited.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, says despite slow pace of work and a number of identifiable irregularities, Governor Makinde wants the company to deliver the contract in line with the original contract they signed in 2017.

The statement cautions political interests who are jumping into the fray of arguments on the 32-kilometre road contract to desist from playing to the gallery.

It notes that opposition in a democracy is meant to be constructive and reasonable and not a set of characters that defend underhand dealings and shady activities.

The statement notes that the Ibadan Circular Project is a 32-kilometre road contract awarded by the immediate past administration under a Build Operate and Transfer concessionaire arrangement at the cost of N67 billion.

It would be recalled that Governor Makinde had last week ordered ENL Consortium Limited to stop work after an inspection tour of the project.

The Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency, OYRTMA, has announced the immediate deployment of its officers to some critical areas of the state, especially within Ibadan metropolis to control and maintain free flow of vehicular movement in the night.

This is contained in a statement by the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun.

The head of the agency, Dr. Akin Fagbemi explained that the decision was premised on the effect of movement of people from neighboring Lagos, Ogun and Osun states to the state capital, Ibadan where commercial activities and security of lives and properties have experienced growth.

Dr Fagbemi said OYRTMA as a responsive agency of government would ensure orderliness and enforce compliance to the state traffic and safety rules and regulations.

“The conducive environment created for both business and residential purposes by the present administration, under governor Seyi Makinde has triggered an exodus of thousands of people and vehicles from our neighboring States of Lagos, Ogun and Osun, this has significantly added to the over 1.5million vehicles plying the available roads in the State thus forcing immense pressure on traffic flow to extend to late nights in certain parts of the State particularly in Ibadan, the State Capital.

“Additionally, based on popular demand of citizens of the state to have our men and officers at certain strategic locations, management has approved with immediate effect, deployment of OYRTMA operatives to man various strategic spots at night in a bid to ensuring free flow of traffic across Oyo State.”

The agency had recently impounded over 50 trailers that parked indiscriminately around the Iwo-Road axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway as they were said to be constituting disturbance to commercial activities in the area as well as causing traffic hold-up on the busy road.

The governor at the event organised by the Ajia and its Environs Descendant Union, declared that he would not disappoint the people of the state or break the trust that the people reposed in him by delivering good governance to the state and developing its nooks and crannies.

He admonished the youths in Ajia and across the state to take their education seriously by making judicious use of the free education policy of his administration so as to become useful and productive to themselves and the society.

“I have begun discussion with the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria and they have given us certain conditions on the upgrade of our airport so that it can accommodate bigger aircrafts. When that is done, those travelling from Osun, Ekiti and Ondo will not need to get to Lagos before boarding flights and what that tells you is that Ajia and other rural communities around the airport as well as the economy of Oyo State, will soon witness a new dawn”, he added.

In a move to sanitise Oyo state highways and ensure free flow of traffic, the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA) has impounded fifty vehicles at the popular Iwo-Road, along Lagos-Ibadan Highway in Ibadan North Local Government in Ibadan.

Several heavy-duty vehicles were indiscriminately parked along the road, causing huge obstruction to free vehicular movement along the corridor and paralyzing economic activities around the area.

The trailers were taken to the agency’s headquarters in the State secretariat at Agodi to allow free flow of traffic.

Agency, OYRTMA, while impounding the trailers at Ibadan

Addressing the drivers of the impounded vehicles, the Chairman of OYRTMA, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, who led the team said the present administration in the state was not out to make life unbearable for the people but to do all within the ambit of the law to woo foreign direct investors through creation of enabling environment devoid of avoidable and perpetual traffic jams.

“You may recall that we recently announced the approval by the governor for immediate use of a 250-trucks capacity parking space at our Sanyo operational center. While frantic efforts are on to secure other parking spaces across the State, we implore all heavy duty vehicle operators to utilize the available park and desist from indiscriminate parking on the highways as this is highly inimical to other road users as well as the fact that it cripples economic activities within the State.

“This operation is not to witch-hunt anybody. We are aware of the technical implications of the continuous parking of this heavy-duty vehicles whose imposing weights far supersedes that of the designed load-carrying capacity of the highways thus destroying the roads by creating portholes at different sections of the highways.

“We therefore enjoin all trailer operators within the State to cooperate with the State Government to achieve free flow of traffic across the 33 local government areas of the State.” Dr. Fagbemi explained.

The state government had about a week ago announced the approval of 250 trucks capacity parking space to de-congest highways within the Ibadan metropolis as a response to prayers from business concerns in the city for government to find a lasting solution to the traffic menace.
