We remain grateful to the Almighty God for yet another Year attained as a country, united by a common destiny and resolute in our determination to overcome the several challenges along the path to build the great and prosperous Nation of our dream.

  1. I salute the courage and resilience of all Nigerians, which was evident in 2021 as this nation, like other countries of the world, faced significant challenges that occurred as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the efforts to restore the global economy and social order.
  2. The persistent insecurity in certain parts of the country may have threatened to unravel the incremental gains achieved in the real sectors of the economy and in the administration’s overall objective to position the nation on the irreversible trajectory of sustainable growth and progress, but I assure you that we will remain resolute in our commitments and shall continue to press ahead with our programmes and plans.
  3. The path to nationhood is often fraught with unpredictable difficulties and challenges, and most tried and tested nations have often prevailed through dogged determination, resilience, concerted commitment to unity, and the conviction that the whole of the nation, standing together against all odds, is by far greater and would ultimately be more prosperous and viable than the sum of its distinguishable parts.
  4. There is no doubt that the issue of Security remains at the front burner of priority areas that this Administration has given utmost attention to. As a follow up to our promise to re-energize and reorganize the security apparatus and personnel of the armed forces and the police, it is on record that this Administration has invested heavily in re-equipping our military in line with upgrading the platforms and firepower required to tackle the current challenges being faced in the country.
  5. The net results of these efforts have been the number of insurgents and bandits who have willingly surrendered to our Security Forces and continue to do so through various channels and the Safe Corridor created for that purpose.
  6. Government, however, realizes that victory on the battlefield is just one aspect of sustainable victory. We know that to fully win this war, we must also win the peace and real security lies in winning the hearts and minds of the affected citizens. To this end, working with our international partners and neighbouring countries, we would be deploying multi-faceted solutions that will be targeted at addressing human security at the grassroots, before it leads to insecurity.
  7. Once again I would like to take a moment to remember and honour the gallant Military, Police Officers, and other security agents who have lost their lives in the cause of protecting the territorial integrity of this Nation against both internal and external aggressors, assuring their families that their sacrifices would not be in vain.
  8. We equally remember and commiserate with Nigerians who have lost loved ones as a result of insecurity in different parts of the country. Every life matters and every single death caused by any form of insecurity is a matter of personal concern to me both as a citizen and as the President of this great country.
  9. We remain fully committed to upholding the constitutional provisions that protect all Nigerians from any form of internal and external aggression.
  10. On the economy, we have shown a high level of resilience to record some significant achievements despite the turbulence that has characterized our economy and indeed the global economy. The lessons we have learned and keep learning from COVID-19 have encouraged us to intensify efforts to mitigate its socio-economic effects on our Nation.
  11. The major wins we have recorded can be clearly seen in Nigeria’s most recent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The 4.03% growth recorded in the third quarter of 2021 is indicative of the recovery being recorded in our economy and the confidence that is being shown through the policies that our Administration has put in place after the outbreak of the pandemic.
  12. We may also recall that this recent growth is closely followed by the 5.1% (year on year) growth in real terms recorded by Nigeria in Quarter 2 of 2021. This growth was one of the best recorded by any nation across Sub-Saharan Africa. The 5.1% growth at that time was and remains the highest growth recorded by the Nigerian economy since 2014.
  13. Despite the challenges we have faced as a Nation, the good news is that we have so far recorded four consecutive quarters of growth after the negative growth rates recorded in Quarter 2 and Quarter 3 of 2020 due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  14. On August 16, 2021 I signed the landmark Petroleum Industry Act into law. The signing of this legacy legislation is a watershed moment in the history of our Nation, considering the massive positive impact the new Act would have on the economy. I would like to sincerely commend the 9th Assembly for the grit they demonstrated, succeeding where others have failed, and the cooperation that led to the completion of this process after almost two decades.
  15. Just like I stated during the investment trips and fora that I have attended recently, the legislation is expected to serve as a liberalizing force in the energy industry, and we are optimistic that this law will provide the much-needed legal, governance, regulatory and fiscal framework for the development of the energy sector, the host communities, and Nigeria as a Nation. Our objective to increase Liquefied Natural Gas exports and expand our domestic market is still very much at the forefront of some of the policies we would be pushing in the new year.
  16. In year 2022 and going forward, our Administration would intentionally leverage ICT platforms to create jobs, while ensuring that the diversification of our economy creates more support to other emerging sectors. I am proud to announce that several foreign investors are taking advantage of our ranking as one of the leading start-up ecosystems in Africa to invest in our digital economy.
  17. We have given the utmost priority to fighting corruption and other related offenses which have been a bane to the growth and prosperity of our dear Nation. We have made major strides and breakthroughs through the innovative use of technology and forensics in the investigative and prosecutorial procedures with commendable results to show that the anti-corruption drive of our Administration is succeeding.
  18. In the meantime, the accomplishments that have been recorded so far can be traced to the dedication of the Nation’s anti-corruption Agencies who have received the necessary support needed to effectively prosecute their duties.
  19. Despite our challenges in 2021, it was also a year in which the Administration executed successfully, key projects, programmes, and initiatives to fulfil the promises made under the Security, Economy Anti-corruption (SEA) agenda.
  20. As we welcome 2022, let us, with hope, envision a year of continued progress against our combined challenges arising from security and socio-economic issues.
  21. As it is said, the past is but a story told, the future will still be written in gold. Let us be united in our fight to keep our Nation united against all odds and with gratitude, celebrate life in this new epoch.
  22. I wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year.

Muhammadu Buhari.

The Committee of Monotechnic and Polytechnic Librarians in Nigeria, COMPLIN, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the huge investment in Polytechnic education especially in the area of Information Communication Technology, ICT.

The chairman of the committee, Dr. Chris Enyia gave the commendation during a meeting of the Committee of Monotechnic and Polytechnic librarians in Nigeria held at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti.

According to him, though much still needed to be done, the Buhari-Administration has shown rare commitment to ICT development in tertiary institutions.

Dr. Enyia charged governments both at the state and federal levels to devote more money to e-libraries of tertiary institutions across the country so as to enhance research work and inculcate reading culture in students.

Also, the second vice-chairman of the committee of Librarians who doubles as the librarian of Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Pastor Emmanuel Ayeni worried over the poor reading culture among students which he said would be addressed if libraries were well equipped.

In his lecture on the topic “Emerging Trends in Data Gathering Management and Application in Decision Making”, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti, Dr. Dayo Oladebeye urged librarians to be conversant with Information Communication Technology tools to enhance better library operations.

For the current fight against corruption in Nigeria to yield the desired result, there is the need for President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently sign an Unexplained Wealth Order into law.

Senator Ndume also maintained that President Buhari should also prevail on the national assembly to pass the proceeds of crime bill without delay.

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide on Monday declared that Governors in the region, national assembly caucus and all the Igbo leaders are ready for meaningful dialogue with the Federal Government on a plethora of challenges facing the Igbo nation and Nigeria.

It also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that its son and leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is produced in court on Thursday, October 21, 2021 during his ongoing trial.

It insisted that the agitation and youth restiveness in the Southeast was simply a reaction or an effect or the consequences of an orchestrated alienation by the federal government over the years.

The group added that until some of the issues of obvious injustice against the Igbo were seen to have been addressed, the chains of catastrophe that threaten the corporate existence of Nigeria might continue to be inevitable.

According to the group: “it is extremely difficult to have peace amidst injustice”.

Ohanaeze’s calls came as streets in Southeast once again returned as ghost towns with residents staying indoors in continuation of the Mondays’ sit-at-home order by the IPOB.

Ohanaeze also emphasised that “we need not look elsewhere to know that IPOB is simply an exponent of Igbo collective sentiments and predicaments in our tortuous journey and an unquantifiable sacrifice for one Nigeria”.

In a statement by the spokesman of the organisation, Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, on Monday, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide said it considered the use of dialogue and political solution as the only workable option open to the presidency and indeed all men and women of goodwill that desire peace and sustainable growth for Nigeria.

The statement reminded President Buhari that his administration and his predecessors had adopted the use of dialogue in trying to resolve the issues of herdsmen, Boko Haram and Niger Delta youth relativeness.

“Ohanaeze recalls with consternation that on May 2, 2019, a Federal Government delegation led by the Minister of Interior, Abdul-Rahman Dambazau, held a meeting with national leaders of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria(MACBAN), as part of steps to address the country’s security challenges. The meeting was hosted by the Governor of Kebbi State, Alh. Atiku Bagudu. In attendance was the then Acting Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Muhammad Adamu….

“During the time of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the Niger Delta was at the peak of youth restiveness and Yar’Adua opened a channel for dialogue and the matter was over. President Goodluck Jonathan, during his incumbency, had set up a committee commonly referred to as the Presidential Committee on Dialogue with Boko Haram, an initiative which has been sustained by President Buhari administration. As at today, Governors in the North have openly demonstrated their desire for dialogue with dreaded groups terrorizing their regions; the videos clips abound.

“Based on the foregoing, the Ohanaeze structures, including the Council of Elders, Council of Traditional Rulers, the Igbo Governors, Igbo NASS members, government officials, Archbishops and the Clergy, stakeholders, youth and women wings, town union, etc are ready for a meaningful dialogue with the federal government of Nigeria on a plethora of challenges facing the igbo nation and Nigeria. Our core objective is a sense of belonging in a country anchored on equity, justice and fairness.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide enunciates that the guardrail of democracy is anchored on toleration, forbearance and dialogue. Good governance is merely an outcome based on the application of the democratic norms and values. And not until the right thing is done and seen to have been done, Nigeria will most likely continue in its downward spiral”, the statement read.

While calling on President Buhari to “ensure that our son, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is produced in court on Thursday, October 21, 2021”, Ohanaeze said, “This is necessary to prove to the global community that Nnamdi Kanu is not only hale and hearty but that shady judicial process is not contemplated while on trial”.

The statement also reiterated its call on the presidency to consider dialogue as a panacea to peace; insisting that the jackboot approach to the IPOB uprising would rather aggravate the precarious situation.

It noted that military and violent means to solve the national question are bound to fail as it leads to further national fractionalisation, anarchy and eventual or inevitable disintegration, as in all empires or multinational states or countries.

Any house owner who fails to comply with the provision of open defecation law in Oyo State is liable on conviction to three months imprisonment or a fine of N50,000 or both.

This followed the passage of the law by the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, at its plenary presided over by the speaker, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin.

The bill also makes it an offense for anyone to defecate in the open or deposit faeces indiscriminately in the state while anyone caught and prosecuted is liable to a fine of N5000 or an option of non-custodial punishment of one week.

Speaking shortly after the passage of the Oyo State Open Defecation Prohibition Bill into law, Mr. Ogundoyin described open defecation as an uncivilized practice which must stop in communities of the state.

He expressed joy that the bill was passed, which he said makes it eighty bills that have been passed by the house within the space of two years.

“This is a new development in our dear state.  The idea of our people throwing their faeces about must stop. This habit spreads some diseases and it is unhealthy hence the new law is meant to discourage this harmful practice. The National Executive Council of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has urged defaulting state governments to domesticate the Medical Residency Training Act 2017, in order to maintain industrial harmony with members across the country.

This was contained in a communique after a virtual emergency meeting launched from the Delta State Teaching Hospital in Oghara.

According to the statement signed by the President of the association, Dr. Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi and the General Secretary, Dr. Jerry Isogun, the law when adopted would address some challenges such as forceful payment of bench fees in some Teaching Hospitals, undue exit of members and salary arrears in states like Ondo, Imo, Kaduna, Lagos, Abia and Ekiti.

The group also advocated the transfer of its members to the IPPIS platform to avoid accumulation of salary arrears and to ease the overall training process.

The Executive Council requested an upward review of the Hazard Allowance to Resident Doctors which currently stands at five thousand naira monthly, despite the health dangers associated with the profession.

They also demanded the immediate payment of all COVID-19 induced allowances by state governments as was done for colleagues in federal institutions.

On the 2021 Medical Residency Training Fund, the statement tasked the relevant agencies in the health ministry to complete the process of approval of the funds by the end of this month.

The NARD, however, commended President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration and some state governments for the numerous collaborations with the body, geared towards ensuring industrial harmony in the health sector.

Speech By His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, President And Commander In Chief Of The Armed Forces Federal Republic Of Nigeria On The Occasion Of Commemoration And Celebration Of Democracy Day On 12th June, 2021

Fellow Nigerians,

I join you all today to commemorate and celebrate our Democracy Day.  It is a celebration of freedom and a victory for one people, one country and one Nigeria.

2. As with all democracies we will always be going through improvement processes in our desire to reach the goal of a mature democracy, a strong, evolved and integrated nation state to be reckoned with globally.

3. In the last two years we have witnessed and overcome a good number of testy challenges that would have destroyed other nations especially relating to our collective security.

4. The indefatigable CAN DO Spirit of the Nigerian has sustained us and would keep pushing us to put these challenges behind us.

5.  Unfortunately some of these challenges came in the shape of violent outrages leading to the loss of lives of many of our dear compatriots and the destruction of some of our infrastructure, including those devoted to improving our democratic processes.

6. Once again, I want to render my sincere and heart-felt condolences to the families and friends of our gallant service men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty and as a sacrifice to keep Nigeria safe.

7. I extend the same condolence to the families and friends of our country men, women and children who were unfortunate victims of such senseless arsons, kidnappings and murders.

8. I also share the pains of families and direct victims of ransom-seeking, kidnaped victims who went through unimaginable trauma in the course of their forced imprisonment.

9. Let me assure my fellow citizens that every incident, however minor gives me great worry and concern and I immediately order security agencies to swiftly but safely rescue victims and bring perpetrators to justice.

Fellow Nigerians,

10.  When you elected me as your President in 2015, you did so knowing that I will put an end to the growing insecurity, especially the insurgency in the North East, but the unintended consequences of our scattering them in the North East pushed them further in-country which is what we are now facing and dealing with.

11. We will, by the Grace of God put an end to these challenges too.

12. Unfortunately, like in most conflict situations, some Nigerian criminals are taking undue advantage of a difficult situation and profiteering therefrom with the misguided belief that adherence to the democratic norms handicaps this Administration from frontally and decisively tackling them.

13. We are already addressing these obstacles and we will soon bring some of these culprits to justice.

14. We are, at the same time addressing the twin underlying drivers of insecurity namely poverty and youth unemployment.

15.  Interventions led by Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria driving economic growth over the past 6 years are targeted mostly to the agricultural, services, infrastructure, power and health care sectors of the economy.

16. In the Agricultural sector, for instance, the Anchor Borrowers Programme resulted in sharp decline in the nation’s major food import bill from $2.23billion in 2014 to US$0.59billion by the end of 2018.

17. Rice import bill alone dropped from $1 billion to $18.5 million annually.

18. This initiative supported local production of rice, maize, cotton and cassava. Government financed 2.5 million small-holder farmers cultivating about 3.2 million hectares of farmland all over the country and created 10 million direct and indirect jobs.

19. Several other initiatives, namely AgriBusiness/Small and Medium Enterprise Investment Scheme, the Non-oil Export stimulation Facility, the Targeted Credit Facilities operated across the 774 Local Governments.

20. In the manufacturing sector the CBN – BOI N200 billion facility financed the establishment and operations of 60 new industrial hubs across the country, creating an estimated 890,000 direct and indirect jobs.

21. The CBN’s N50 billion Textile Sector intervention Facility increased capacity utilization of ginneries from 30% to nearly 90%.

22. The Economic Sustainability Plan – our rebound plan for the COVID-19 pandemic developed in 2020 is currently being executed. The plan is primarily focused on the non-oil sector, which has recorded phenomenal growth contributing over 90% to the GDP growth in Q1 2021.

23. Though marginal we have recorded GDP growth over two quarters; Q2 2020 and Q1 2021.  This is evidence of a successful execution of the ESP by the Federal Government.

24. My vision of pulling 100 million poor Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years has been put into action and can be seen in the National Social Investment Programme, a first in Africa and one of the largest in the world where over 32.6m beneficiaries are taking part. We now have a National Social register of poor and vulnerable households, identified across 708 local government areas, 8,723 wards and 86,610 communities in the 36 States and the FCT.

25. Our conditional cash transfer program has benefited over 1.6 million poor and vulnerable households comprising more than 8 million individuals. This provides a monthly stipend of N10,000 per household.

26. I have also recently approved the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy Plan that augments existing plans to further reduce poverty in Nigeria.

27. As at the end of 2020, the Development Bank of Nigeria had disbursed 324 billion Naira in loans to more than 136,000 MSMEs, through 40 participating Financial Institutions. I am to note that 57% of these beneficiaries are women while 27% are the youth.

28. We are able to do all these and still accelerate our infrastructure development through sensible and transparent borrowing, improved capital inflow, improving and increasing revenue through capturing more tax bases and prudent management of investment proceeds in the Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Fellow Nigerians,

29. Our infrastructure revolution continues with key projects attaining critical milestones under the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund; The Second Niger Bridge, The Lagos- Ibadan Expressway and the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway.

30. I have also approved the establishment of Infraco Plc, a world-class infrastructure development vehicle wholly focused on Nigeria with a capital structure of N15 trillion.

31. The rail system is not left out as the Itakpe-Warri standard gauge rail was completed and commissioned 33 years after construction began. The Lagos-Ibadan double track railway line which I have just commissioned has commenced operations.

32. We are focused on ensuring that our infrastructure drive is key to economic growth and one that can be felt by every Nigerian. Building critical infrastructure in our ports is also opening up opportunities for the Nigerian economy.

33. My approval for 4 new seaports using a Public-Private-Partnership approach is hinged on growing the Nigerian economy. These four sea ports; Lekki Deep Sea Port, Bonny Deep Sea Port, Ibom Deep Sea Port and Warri Deep Sea port will create massive job opportunities and foreign investment inflows.

34. We have worked at deepening our Eastern ports leading to success like having three container ships berth at Calabar port, a first in 11 years.  Similarly, on October 30 2019, an LPG tanker operated by NLNG berthed in Port Harcourt, the first time an LPG ship is berthing at any of the Eastern Ports.

35. As we invest in these new assets, we have also made strides in ensuring that they are secured and protected. In this regard I am also pleased to note the launch of the NIMASA Deep Blue project – which is an Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure that I recently commissioned. This initiative is designed to add to the layer of security we have to safeguard our maritime sector.

Dear Nigerians,

36. I will be the first to admit that in spite of our efforts and achievements which are there for all to see, there is still much more to be done and we are doing our best in the face of scarce resources and galloping population growth rate that consistently outstrips our capacity to provide jobs for our populace. Our over-all economic target of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years is our goal notwithstanding COVID-19.

37. In the last two years we lifted 10.5 million people out of poverty – farmers, small-scale traders, artisans, market women and the like.

38. I am very convinced that this 100 million target can be met and this informed the development of a National poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy. The specific details of this accelerated strategy will be unveiled shortly.

39. In the last one year, Nigeria and the whole world faced COVID-19 for which no one was fully prepared.

40. Our response to the pandemic involved making hard choices in balancing livelihoods and public health concerns.  You are all living witnesses to how successful this has been due to a number of pro-active measures put in place.  Our response to COVID-19 is globally acclaimed.

41. We were able to ensure that the various lockdown measures did not impact too negatively on the ability of ordinary Nigerians to continue sustaining their livelihoods.

42. During the pandemic, we disbursed N5, 000 to 1 million Nigerians using a Rapid Response Register and advanced N20,000 to 750,000 beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer Progamme and provided 1.37 million Nigerians with palliatives from CACOVID.

43. At the same time the Federal Government released 109,000 metric tonnes of food reserve stocks and 70,000 metric tonnes of grains to the poor and vulnerable in all 36 states of the federation.

44. In addition, Government reduced interest rates from 9% to 5% for struggling businesses and extended credit facilities to 548,345 beneficiaries.

Fellow Nigerians,

45. When this administration decided to change our Democracy Day from 29th May to June 12th in my first tenure, it was not only to honour the sacrifices of the men and women of our country who fought for the return to democracy but also to demonstrate our commitment to satisfy the aspirations of the people and creating an environment for democracy to be an accepted way of life.

46. As your President, I remain committed to providing an enabling environment for a free, fair and credible electoral system under my tenure.

47. However, you need to play your part by getting involved at any level you can supporting a democratic system that works for all and not for a section or a select few and demand accountability from your elected leaders.

48. My commitment to bequeathing a sustainable democratic culture remains resolute, my pursuit of a fair society remains unshaken and my desire to see that Nigeria remains a country for each and every one of us has never been stronger.

49. In responding to the challenges that this period imposes on us, Government also recognises the need to acknowledge notions of marginalisation and agitations for constitutional amendments among various segments of our population.

50. While this government is not averse to constitutional reform as part of our nation building process, everyone must understand that the primary responsibility for constitutional amendments lies with the National Assembly.

51. This body which, as I said, is the arm of government responsible for constitutional changes has concluded the preliminary stages of amending and improving our constitution in a way that the majority of Nigerians will be happy with.

52. Government is, however, willing to play a critical role in the constitutional amendment process without usurping the powers of the National Assembly in this regard.

53. As a nation we have come very far from where we started and we are getting incrementally closer to where we ought to be.

54. Overcoming the present challenges is but one of a necessary process that we have to undergo as a nation so that we can come out stronger.  The day I joined the Nigerian Army I was prepared to lay down my life for Nigeria.

55. As your President I remain ever committed to upholding and defending Nigeria’s corporate existence.

56. In adhering to the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy notably section 14(2)(b) I shall do all within my power to ensure that the Security and welfare of the people remain the primary purpose of government.

57. I have, throughout my tenure, provided the security agencies with all they require relative to available resources and will be providing more as the dynamics unfold to put an end to our security problems.

58. My strong belief in the Nigerian spirit gives me comfort that we are facing these challenges with renewed commitment to keep our country one.

59. I thank you for your patience and attention and more importantly your resolve to join hands in making Nigeria the country of our dream.

Happy Democracy Day!

God Bless us All,

God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Political Awareness Group, PAG has thrown its weight behind the Federal  Government’s suspension of  the popular micro-blogging platform, Twitter.

In a statement in Ibadan by the Chairman and Secretary of the group, Barrister Abdul-Waheed Olowonjaye and Mr Abass Agbara, the group rejected any attempt by Twitter to undermine Nigeria’s security and its sovereignty; physically or digitally.

PAG explains that the courageous statement  made by the President on Twitter  to warn terrorist organizations informing them of the readiness to handle them in proportion was deleted making the tech giant attempting to regulate or muffle the President on matters of such height of National Security.

“We reject any attempt to corner the President into silence on National Security matter which is his immediate responsibility”.

“We reject any attempt by Twitter and/ or any other organization for that matter  to aid or abet terrorism or any subversive elements within or outside Nigeria to overtly or covertly compromise Nigeria National security”.

The group decried the roles Twitter played during the #EndSARS protest and the tactical support being given to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

“Most observers can recall that Twitter had offered heavy logistics to the #ENDSARS protest in the past.

It is also clearly discernible today that Twitter facilitated financial supports for the unprecedentedly  daring, misguided, and glaring lawlessness that caused avoidable mayhem with its attendant cost fortune in human and material resources in the Country”.

“We recall too that the proscribed terrorist organization, IPOB has enjoyed tremendous support and projection from same Twitter for so long till date. It is unheard of, that the organization (a declared terrorist group maiming and killing innocent Nigerians) find so much support with Twitter that a region of the country is becoming ungovernable”.

PAG believed that the freedom of expression of the people had not been gauged since there are other platforms for people to voice out their minds.

“We affirm that the freedom of expression of the citizens is not, by the ban, breached as we have many other law abiding digital and electronics media that still abound and remain usefully intact in Nigeria”.

The group enjoined the Federal Government to extend regulation to other social media platforms while commensurate tax should also be worked out.

“We call on the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to also regulate all other social media outfits operating in the country as a matter of necessity”. “We  also call on the Federal Government to seek enabling tax from all Social Media outfits as she does for conventional media houses”.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged the Federal government to reverse its suspension of popular social media platform, Twitter’s operations in Nigeria.

Governor Makinde who made the appeal posted via his twitter handle, noted that a lot of Nigerian youths, businesses and digital communication companies would be negatively affected by the suspension.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s statement in full

It has become imperative for me to release a statement regarding the suspension of Twitter’s operations in Nigeria by the Federal Government.

As leaders, we should go beyond emotional reactions to issues and think about how our actions will affect the people we lead and our international ratings socially and economically.

Twitter has become the platform for young people and indeed all Nigerians to exercise their fundamental right to express and publish an opinion. They use the platform to complain, argue and give feedback to government and its agencies who in turn, use these to improve policies.

This is a fundamental point that should be kept in mind as we debate the necessity of this suspension.

We should also remember that Twitter has gone beyond a source of communication for many of our hardworking youths in Nigeria.

It has become a source of livelihood for many, irrespective of their political affiliations or religious leanings.

Nigerian youths and digital communications organisations earn a living from being able to use the platform to post communications on behalf of their clients.

Others who may not have physical stores also rely on Twitter to give visibility to their products and services.

Furthermore, I believe the Federal Government should be actively interested in how certain policies and action will affect investor confidence.

I, therefore, use this medium to appeal to the Federal Government to reverse this suspension for the greater good of Nigerians.

VP attends Service Celebrating Life of Pastor Adeboye’s son at Redemption Camp.

Pastor Dare Adeboye lived a life filled with zeal, speed, and emphasized what was important and needed to be done at the right time according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Professor Osinbajo stated this in a tribute to the pastor and son of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A Adeboye who passed on last week.

The Vice President’s tribute was read at a service of songs that was held at the Redemption Camp by Pastor Bisi Akande, Pastor in Charge of Lagos Region 35, although the VP was in attendance at the event alongside his wife, Her Excellency, Pastor Dolapo Osinbajo.

Describing the attributes of Pastor Dare, the Vice President stated that “he knew what was important to do and to emphasize and he worked very hard, everywhere, with the zeal and speed of one who knew that we don’t have all day.”

“He understood the dynamics and urgency of reaching young people with the gospel, especially because of their fundamental role in the sustainable growth of the church of God.”

According to the Vice President, Pastor Dare was in many ways, a representative of the future of Christian Ministry, “a new generation birthed in a period of great turbulence in ideas and doctrines, a surfeit of distractions, but committed to ensuring that the unvarnished gospel is preached to that generation.”

He further went on to say that despite the late pastor’s position of privilege, “he was deeply and unpretentiously respectful, not just of elders and those in authority, but of everyone, even his subordinates.”

Speaking on his personality, Prof Osinbajo noted that “everyone has a story to tell of Dare’s warmth, compassion, friendliness and his open displays of affection for others.”

The Vice President once again offered his condolences to Pastor Dare’s wife, Temiloluwa; his children, Oluwatishe, Ireoluwa and Araoluwa; Daddy and Mummy G.O, his siblings, family members and the entire RCCG family.

At the event were the former Governors of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; of Ondo State Mr. Segun Mimiko; the wife of former Imo State Governor, Mrs. Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha and the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, Bishop Wale Oke, and several other dignitaries.

THE Presidency on Tuesday warned that it will deal decisively with any group that does anything to undermine the democratically elected government in the country. even if some unruly feathers would be ruffled in the process. The Presidency also said that it was ready to keep the country together even if it involves ruffling unruly feathers in the process.

The Presidency in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, in Abuja, alleged that some persons have planned to hold an illegal conference where a vote of no confidence will be passed on President Muhammadu Buhari. It further said that some highly placed individuals in collaboration with some religious leaders and their foreign elements were working hard to undermine the sovereignty and corporate existence of the country. Reacting to the alert earlier raised by the Department of State Services, DSS, the Presidency said that Nigerians opted for democratic rule, adding that the only acceptable way to change a democratically elected government should be through elections.

The statement read, “The Department of State Services (DSS), on Sunday alerted on sinister moves by misguided elements to wreak havoc on the government, sovereignty and corporate existence of the country. “Championed by some disgruntled religious and past political leaders, the intention is to eventually throw the country into a tailspin, which would compel a forceful and undemocratic change of leadership. “Further unimpeachable evidence shows that these disruptive elements are now recruiting the leadership of some ethnic groups and politicians around the country, with the intention of convening some sort of conference, where a vote of no confidence would be passed on the President, thus throwing the land into further turmoil.

“The caterwauling, in recent times, by these elements, is to prepare the grounds adequately for their ignoble intentions, which are designed to cause further grief for the country. “The agent provocateurs hope to achieve through artifice and sleight of hands, what they failed to do through the ballot box in the 2019 elections. “Nigerians have opted for democratic rule, and the only acceptable way to change a democratically elected government is through elections, which hold at prescribed times in the country. Any other way is patently illegal and even treasonable. Of course, such would attract the necessary consequences. “These discredited individuals and groups are also in cahoots with external forces to cause maximum damage in their own country. But the Presidency, already vested with mandate and authority by Nigerians till 2023, pledges to keep the country together, even if some unruly feathers would be ruffled in the process.”

News Analysis

The security challenges bedeviling the country have continued to gender nuances of reactions in the polity.

Where there have been expressions of concerns, there have also been outright criticism of government handling of the situation.

The security cauldron has also been steaming waves of sentiments, spurious claims, and agitations in public domain.

While government’s response at its flanks could be lauded, some of these have shown failure to take criticisms in good faith.

However, recently, an elder statesman was credited with a comment asking President Muhammadu Buhari to resign and hand over to the military.

Unequivocally, the comment is retrogressive and to all intent undesirable.

It amounts to a furthering of the cloud of anarchy swarming over the country.

Military incursion into the nation’s political landscape, it had been variously acknowledged, accounted for the country’s weak political structure.

Little wonder the innuendo nascent is used in describing democracy in Nigeria despite sixty years of nationhood.

An invite to the military to assume the rein of governance, thus constitutes an attempt to roll back the little gains of the last decades.

Undeniably, Nigerian political class could be likened to the leopard that cannot change its spot.

Glaringly, ineptitude, corruption still run riot in governance from 1999 till date as was the case in 1983 when the military shoved aside the civilian administration.

This, however does not make the military establishment saints in matters of crass sleaze, the escapade of General Sanni Abacha cannot be quickly forgotten.

Those muting the idea of military regime again in Nigeria in the twenty first century world, seem not to feel the pulse of world rightly, no matter the current crisis in the country.

The international community considers military regime as aberration to the norms of governance.

Civil populace in countries worldwide are also averse to rule via the barrel of the gun and decrees.

In chad, for example, protests have greeted the assumption of general Mahamat Deby into power in place of his father Idris derby who died while fighting rebels.

Same for Myanmar, where coup leader General Min Aung Hlaing is being told in strong terms by the citizens that the juntas have no place in governance in their society.

Similarly, last year, African Union and ECOWAS made it known to Colonel Assimi Goita that military rule is anathema on the continent.

Mali’s military bowed to pressure as AU and ECOWAS were prepared to ostracize the country further.

It is noteworthy that the military establishment in Nigeria has distanced itself from the call, with the defence headquarters charging officers to stick to their constitutional role.

Rather than mute the idea of the military stepping in to take the rein of governance, what should occupy the minds of all and sundry is about how the nation can collectively weather the current storms of security breaches.

And the present administration should take the lead by outrightly displaying the will to address security concerns which has lead to the emergence of regional security outfits.

Government should be seen reining in all non-state actors threatening national cohesion without pandering to any tribal whim.

And for the opposition, they should not see the current security challenges as opportunity for pull down syndrome, but rather they should collaborate with government for a way out of the quagmire.

For what goes round does surely come round.

President Muhammadu Buhari recommits to freedom of the press, and urges media professionals to wield freedom responsibly.

The president celebrated the landmark of the world press freedom Day with the media, saying the freedom was an irreducible minimum in a democracy.

“The media must be sensitive to what the country is going through and anything that would exacerbate the situation, and further inflame passions and emotions, should be avoided,” the president said in a statement on Sunday.

He stated that the media needs to ensure that while carrying out its duty and setting agenda for public discourse, it does not encourage incendiary words and actions that could further hurt Nigeria’s unity.

He pledged more cooperation with the media in line with the theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day, ‘Information as a Public Good.’

Also, he charged those who manage information for government to do everything in public interest, while also encouraging the media to use the Freedom of Information Act.

It is very vital to have access to reliable information in an era of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech, PMB added.
