The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, ODIEC, has postponed the April 18 local government election indefinitely.

The postponement according to the Chairman of the commission, Professor Yomi Dinakin at a press briefing was due to the coronavirus, COVID-19 outbreak in the country and the need to align with the situation.

Professor Dinakin explained that the ten participating political parties in the council poll and the commission had agreed at a meeting on the decision of the postponement.

The ODIEC Chairman said though the commission had put in place adequate measures for the smooth conduct of the election but has to align with the federal and state government’s decision on the safety of Nigerians.

Professor Dinakin noted that the commission while awaiting further government directives would meet with stakeholders on April 9th on any other development.

He also attributed the new development to the fact that parties could not campaign and the possibility of controlling the crowds in relation to social distancing.
