National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to assent the bill seeking to amend the law establishing the scheme.

The amendment seeks to make the Health scheme compulsory for all in order to achieve Universal Health coverage.

The Executive Secretary NHIS, Dr Mohammed Sambo made this known at an informal engagement forum with health correspondents in Kaduna.

The law establishing the NHIS from the inception did not make the scheme mandatory for all, hence the inability of the scheme to cover all citizens

Dr Mohammed Sambo upon assumption moved for the amendment of the law establishing the scheme to make it mandatory, as well as bringing on board the state health insurance scheme for better health.

The NHIS boss explained that the scheme would be fully automated to allow citizens to register and access their services from the comfort of their home.

According to him, the e-NHIS would create transparency in the scheme and inform enrollees of the right services they require from their HMO.

When asked about his achievements towards the presidential mandate, Dr Mohammed Sambo highlighted them to include improved technical operational system, the introduction of innovative financing through national coverage of retirees and senior citizens as well as saving funds to the tune of 6billion Naira in the last one year.

Participants were drawn from kaduna state and the FCT.
