Early presentation of cholera cases to health facilities and management of the disease with first aid treatment will reduce the rate of cholera death.

Oyo state team lead, Institute of Virology Nigeria, Doctor Samuel Akingbesote disclosed this while featuring on straight talk, an interview programme on premier 93.5 FM.

Doctor Akingbesote said the management of cholera and any form of diarrhea diseases was the replacement of fluids through oral rehydration therapy known as ORS, or the indigenous sugar/salt solution which can also serve as first aid.

While noting that the eradication of the outbreak of cholera is a collective responsibilities of individuals, governments, health practitioners and the media urged people to wash food items and fruits before eating and consume only well cooked foods.

He attributed the expansion in size of population, open defecation, lack of proper hygiene and hand washing as well as indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainages as major causes of cholera outbreak in the country.
