It’s hard to see a picture of Machu Picchu without wanting to jump right in.

The vibrant green grass, majestic craggy peaks, and remarkable stone ruins are breathtakingly beautiful.

This archaeological masterpiece was once an Inca City (in the 15th and 16th centuries).

Today, it’s one of the most phenomenal of all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and one that millions have placed at the top of their bucket lists.

Machu Picchu stands 2,430m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting.

It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments.

The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Not surprisingly, Machu Picchu is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Peru.

To get here, you’ll have to plan your visit well.

Entry is only permitted twice a day (in the morning or afternoon), and you’ll have to either hike along the famed Inca Trail or take a bus from the nearby town of Aguas Calientes for access.
