Ogun state government has called for a concerted efforts from stakeholders especially the professional bodies to prevent incident of building collapse across the state.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Olatunji Odunlami who made the call in Abeokuta said the state would sign a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU with the state chapter of Building Collapse Prevention Guild, BCPG, to forestal unnecessary loss of lives and property arising from building collapse.

Mr Odunlami explained that the collaboration would also institutionalise effective control mechanism to ensure that all constructions in the State were captured, monitored and structurally certified from foundation to completion.

The Physical Planning and Urban Development Commissioner who described the rate at which buildings were being erected without following due process as worrisome said the government would partner private regulatory body to monitor building construction.

Mr Odunlami said the Guild would be expected to assist the government in the inspection and certification of building constructions in partnership with the Ogun State Building Production Management Authority and advised the body to desist from acts that could damage the reputation of the State government.

In a remark, the Chairman BCPG in the State, Mr. Segun Sogbetun reaffirmed the commitment of the body to partner the state government in its mission to guarantee safe and resilient habitat for the people.

He gave the assurance that they were ready to give necessary professional support for government to deliver on its set objectives in the sector.
