For every democratic system to function effectively and yield desired dividends, voters must fully understand their rights and responsibilities.

This was the submission of a former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Dr Adekunle Ogunmola, while delivering a lecture at a public function in Ibadan.

Dr Ogunmola explained that elections offered the citizenry opportunity to exercise its basic right which was to freely choose their representatives in government.

The former INEC boss, however, noted that the decision of many eligible citizens not to vote during elections had often led to misfit representation and has also hindered the realisation of the desired dividends of democracy in Nigeria.

Dr Ogunmola said the 2023 general elections was another opportunity for Nigerians to use their voting powers to chart a good way forward for themselves and future generations.

Also at the event, the Secretary-General, Pan African Writers Association, Dr Wale Okediran said there was no better time to enlighten Nigerians on their voting rights than now when all active players had begun preparations for next year’s elections.
