The need to implement the Oyo state violence against persons prohibition, VAPP law has been reiterated.


Speaker Oyo state house of assembly ,Mr Adebo Ogundoyin stated this at the public presentation of the law.


Mr Ogundoyin who commended the contribution and support of the Westminister foundation Democracy for making the law a reality said all stakeholders must work together to get residents of the state informed about the law and strengthen the enforcement.


Chairman house committee on women Affairs and Children Mrs Olawunmi Oladeji noted that Oyo state had fully adopted the law which had also been produced in Braille version for the visually impaired and in Yoruba version aside the English version applies to all genders while also considering child offenders among others.


In her remarks the wife of the Oyo state governor,Mrs Tamunominini Makinde listed sexual based violence,gender based violence and female Genital Mutilation as some societal vices that needed to be eradicated.


Mrs Makinde called on victims to report assault to appropriate authorities and cautioned perpetrators to desist from such acts as tough times await them.


The Westminister foundation for democracy,WFD’ s country representative, Mr Adebowale Olorunmola said the VAPP law was revised and repackaged to include some missing parts of the violence against women law which was earlier passed into law.


Mr Olorunmola commended the state government and the house of assembly for the enabling environment provided for them.


Some of the stakeholders from ministry of women Affairs and social inclusion, ministry of Justice,Non governmental organizations promised to collaborate to make the VAPP law vibrant.


Oyo state was one of the few states in Nigeria to pass the VAPP into law.
