Tension in Ikakumo Akoko over Farmers-Herders Clashes

Tension and palpable fear hang in the air in Ikakumo Akoko, an agrarian community in Akoko North East Local Akoko area of Ondo.

Report says that farmers are now staying away from their farms due to incessant farmers-herders clashes.

The latest incident involved a 40-year-old farmer Mr Idowu Bayode who was macheted by two herdsmen on his farm.

Narrating his ordeal to Positive FM on his hospital bed, the victim said that he went to his cashew plantation where he met the herdsmen plucking the cashew into sacks.

 Mr Bayode said while seeking to find out why the herdsmen were plucking cashew on his farm, they attacked him with their cutlasses, while he cried for help..

According Mr Bayode, the timely presence of his brother who came and saw him in a pool of blood as the herdsmen had inflicted deep cuts on him, saved him.

The chairman of Ikakumo Development Council, Mr Festus Omogboye said there was a siege on Ikakumo as people were now afraid to go to their farms and markets.

A community leader, Prince Foluso Aminu condemned the incident, calling on the state government to beef up security in the area being a border town with Edo State.

The Ikare Divisional Superintendent of Police, Mr Olatujoye Akinwande who confirmed the incident said one person has been arrested over the incident.
