The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa- Ali Pantami has called on state governments across the nation to establish the ministry of digital economy to sustain the sector’s role in boosting the nation’s economy.

Professor Pantami stated this during a Courtesy call on Oyo state Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde at the state’s Secretariat, Agodi,Ibadan as part of activities for the10th National Council on Communications and Digital Economy, held in Ibadan.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Alli Isa Pantami, who was in Ibadan for the 10th session of the National Council on Communication and Digital Economy, stated that he was at the Governor’s Office to appreciate Governor Makinde for his support to the session.

Professor Pantami while pointing out that ICT or digital economy could not be implemented effectively under another ministry said it must be independent to drive the economy.

He affirmed that digital economy had contributed significantly to economic growth, job creation as well as increase the revenue generation of the country than any other sector.

According to Professor Pantami, ICT alone contributed 18.44 percent revenue to the economy in the second quarter of 2022

Responding, Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun said the present government had also priortised ICT to drive its policies and programmes.

Governor Makinde stated that his administration was aware that investing in digital economy was important to expanding the state’s economy, which is one of its strategic points, and had put policies and framework on ICT in place by digitising all processes in the state.

Governor Makinde affirmed that his administration would take note of what could be done about creating a ministry of digital economy, as requested by the minister as ICT is the future.
