Recording significant success in the 2023 election demands the active collaboration of all and sundry in the country including journalists

Governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje made the remark while opening a two-day special delegate conference and review of the constitution of the union in Kano.

Dr Ganduje described the role of journalists as vital to the survival of every democracy and urged the media not to jeopardize the electoral process by being used by politicians to spread misinformation but be apolitical and minimize harm through factual reports.

The Kano State helmsman, therefore, urged journalists to conform to the highest ethical standards in their reportage ahead of the general elections.

NUJ President Chief Chris Isiguzo said it was necessary that the media allocate equal time and space to politicians, be fair, accurate, objective and balanced in their professional conduct saying that the role of the media in deepening democracy cannot be overemphasized.

Chief Isiguzo said journalists must brace up in their responsibilities of informing and educating the electorate to make informed decision at the polls while holding public office holders accountable.

Kano State Commissioner for Information, Mallam Muhammad Garba, while describing as apt the theme ‘Conflict, Sensitive Reporting and Nigerian Journalism”, challenged journalists to eschew all forms of primordial, ethnic and religious sentiments in conflict reporting but inculcate responsible and positive reporting for the unity, stability and development of the nation.

Delegates to the conference were drawn from the 36 state councils of the union across the country and the FCT, including national officials.
