Nigeria records over one thousand cases of oral cancer each year with not less than seven hundred mortality.

Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire stated during training for health workers on oral cancer in Abuja.

Dr Ehanire who was represented by the Head, Dentistry Division in the Ministry, Dr. Gloria Uzoigwe, said many Nigerians were unaware of the deadly effects of the mouth disease, hence the need for more enlightenment on it.

The Minister said over 700 Nigerians die yearly from the ailment, and that the ministry would soon launch a policy to tackle the rising cases of oral cancer, facial deformity and cleft in the country.

The Executive Director Cleft and facial deformity foundation, Dr. Seidu Bello, said that early detection was key to tackling the disease, stressed the importance of using Artificial intelligence to solve critical health issues.

University College Hospital, University of Ibadan, Professor Bukola Adeyemi, highlighted some causes of oral cancer to include smoking, alcohol and oral sex.

The Secretary General, Nigerian Dental Association Dr. Ukachi Nnawuihe, the Association was working to partner with the National Health Insurance Authority to incorporate oral treatment in the health insurance.

Dr Nnawuihe urged Nigerians who notice persistent mouth ulcers for two weeks to seek immediate medical attention.
