Stakeholders Task Women Journalists on Gender issues

Stakeholders have called on women journalists on the need to put more emphasis on gender issues for a balanced and equitable media industry.

They made the call at a one-day training organized for women journalists by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism Report on Women Female Reporters Leadership Programme in Akure with the theme “Gender Mainstreaming in the Media”.

In a welcome address, the convener, Mrs Olufisoye Adenitan of Radio Nigeria revealed that data had shown over time that women’s issues were not being given the desired attention in the media.

This she said necessitated the call on female journalists to be intentional in reporting the issue of women.

The chairman of the occasion and the Special Adviser to the Ondo state Governor Akeredolu on Gender Matter, Mrs Olamide Falana commended the convener for blazing the trail in investigative journalism and gender reportage.

According to Mrs. Falana, in achieving gender mainstreaming, female journalists should uphold the tenets of the profession.

In a goodwill message Ondo NUJ Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite asked for support for women journalists 

Acting Chairperson, Ondo NAWOJ, Mrs. Tola Gbadamosi enjoined the journalists to always key into programs that would develop their potential.

The General Manager, Positive FM, Akure, Mrs. Olubunmi Olalere represented by the manager news, Mrs Dupe Isename emphasized that gender mainstream in the media was beyond increasing women’s participation but also men’s.

Contributing, the Director, of News and Current Affairs, Ondo State Radiovision Corporation, OSRC, Ms. Nike Busari encouraged women journalists not to allow censorship or hazards of the job to prevent them from forging ahead to stardom.

Ondo FIDA Chairperson, Mrs. Jumoke Ogunjebi tasked journalists on the need to be thorough in their calling upholding Journalism ethics.

In the lecture, Mrs. Titi Fola-Adebayo stated that gender mainstream refers to the integration of a gender perspective into all aspects of media content, production, news reporting, content production, and editorial

Decision-making processes, with the aim of promoting gender equality.

Professor Fola-Adebayo listed the forward to include Ensuring sustainability of initiatives, developing gender-sensitive guidelines, conducting gender-awareness training, Promoting gender diversity in newsrooms, Analyzing gender representation in media

Content and encouraging women’s voices and perspectives.

Participants at the program appreciated the convener and sponsor, Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism for the training which they described as an eye opener.
