Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been released after spending over 3months in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS, through its Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Peter Afunaya, announced Bawa’s release late on Wednesday.

Bawa’s arrest came immediately after his suspension by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on allegations of abuse of office.

During the investigation, former Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, also accused Bawa of soliciting a $2 million bribe from him, an allegation that Bawa has denied.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier filed a motion appealing the ruling of the Court of Appeal sentencing its Chairman, Abubakar Bawa to prison.

The Commission, in a motion before the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, also asked for a stay of execution of the judgment of the Kogi State High Court delivered on December 12, 2022, and the consequential order made on February 6, 2023, in the suit between the EFCC and Ali Bello

Following Bawa’s departure, Ola Olukoyede has taken over as the new EFCC Chairman.
