Oyo Police Parades Suspected Cultists

By Rasheedah Makinde

Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr Ayodele Sonubi has reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in accordance with the dictates of the constitution and other guiding instruments of the law.

Mr Sonubi stated this while parading fifteen suspected cultists at the Police Headquarters, Eleyele Ibadan.

The Police commissioner said the Command received disturbing reports of cult-related activities in some parts of the metropolis, particularly around Apete, Abayomi (Iwo-Road axis), Ijokodo, Moniya, Monatan, Ojoo, Samonda and Sango areas of the State, which prompted an emergency response from them.

Mr Sonubi, who explained that an investigation by the command revealed the retaliatory attempt by a rival cult, however, called on parents, guardians and community leaders to prevail on their children, wards and followers against cultism and other social vices.

He noted that the command would not relent in ensuring that any individual or group who disturbs the relative peace of the state faces the full wrath of the law.

Mr Sonubi stated further that, within the period in view, residents would witness high-level visibility policing, coordinated stop and searches and intelligence-led raids, urging residents in the state to support the police force in the state in fostering peace and security.

However, he urged residents to always provide useful information to the police and other security agencies so that they can take prompt action.

The police commissioner added that the arrested suspects would soon be charged in court after proper investigation.

Some of the paraded suspects, who were arrested for offences ranging from cultism, unlawful possession of firearms and other illicit banned substances, confessed to the crimes levelled against them and pleaded for leniency.

Items recovered from the suspects included five inscribed cultism jackets, three Dane guns, one locally made pistol, one locally made cut-to-size gun, one long barrel gun, a red Toyota Camry with Reg NO. KTU 41 JH, one red cloth, one powder blue beret with an inscription, and three cutlasses.
