Ogun state government has completed the first phase of 35 housing units at the Ibara Government Reservation Area,GRA, Abeokuta, as part of its urban renewal efforts.
During an inspection of ongoing construction at the Ibara Government Reservation Area, GRA, and the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate along Kobape Road in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun said the housing projects had improved the appearance and livability of the state’s major cities.
He stated that his vision is becoming a reality through transformative projects in major towns across the state.
Governor Abiodun expressed concern over the poor condition of the GRAs before his administration stepped in, noting many were uninhabitable
He praised the progress made so far, including the installation of drainage systems, sidewalks, solar-powered streetlights, electricity, and water systems.
The governor commended the Commissioner for Housing and his team for their hard work, saying: “A vision without an effective team cannot be realized. Fortunately, our team has worked diligently to bring our vision to life, and the results are evident.”
He promised similar urban renewal projects for GRAs in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ota.
Governor Abiodun also reiterated his goal of attracting more residents and investors from Lagos to Ogun State through better infrastructure and housing opportunities.
At the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate along Kobape Road, the governor explained that the project was inherited from the previous administration and initially faced legal disputes.
He explained that government resolved these issues out of court to ensure the project’s continuation and described the estate as a noble initiative to provide quality housing in a prime location in Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of continuity in governance, saying: “I looked beyond personalities and focused on the collective interest of the state. This estate represents a significant investment in the welfare of our people, and I am pleased that we have transformed it into a first-class residential community.”
He urged prospective buyers to take advantage of the current prices before potential increases due to inflation.
Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Akande Omoniyi, explained that the Ibara GRA renewal project aims to modernize the estate, which was originally built in 1976.
He said four clusters were currently active, with the first phase of 200 duplexes set for commissioning in the next two months while additional units will be ready by December.
Our correspondent reports that the urban renewal and housing projects reflected Ogun State government’s commitment to creating modern, livable communities and boosting economic growth through strategic infrastructure development.
